Revolution. When we imagine a revolution taking place, we envisage a change. The status quo has been removed, something new has taken its place. A 180 degree turnaround. Yet a revolution can also make us think of a full turn, a circle, a wheel. A 360 degree turnaround. This paradox forms the theme of August films at RARA.
August 2nd - The Battle of Algiers (1966) - dir. Gillo Pontecorvo - 121 mins
We begin in the past with a powerful insight into one of the bloodiest conflicts; the overthrow of the ancien regime. Banned in France for 5 years and condemned by Le Pen, The Battle of Algiers was bizarrely screened at the Pentagon in 2003 to gain insight into the problems being faced in Iraq.
August 9th - Bodysong (2003) - dir. Simon Pummell - 83 mins
The cycle of life. A beautiful and terrifying journey through the behaviours and rituals of mankind, scored by Jonny Greenwood.
August 16th - A Sunday in Hell - dir. Jorgen Leth - 111 mins
"We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us" - McLuhan. The revolution of the wheel brings us the incredible drama of the Paris - Roubaix 1976 featuring Merckx, De Vlaeminck, Maertens and Moser.
August 23rd - Alphaville: A Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution - dir. Jean-Luc Godard - 99 mins
And now to the revolution of the future... Godard's intergalactic hero Lemmy Caution is on a mission to kill the inventor of Fascist computer Alpha 60!
Films start at 19:30, ale is ready to be drunk, hope to see you!
