Cabinet Meeting

I don't know how we got roped into this one but it should be interesting...

'THE CABINET OFCURIOSITY

InternshipOpportunity with Ministry of Stories, Pippa Nissen Studio and RARA (RedundantArchitects Recreational Association).

The Ministry of Storiesis here to inspire a nation of young storytellers. Hidden away at the back of Hoxton Street Monster Supplies (where else would you expect it?) is a new home forwriting in East London that offers young people free workshops and one-to-onementoring. These are provided by volunteers: local writers, artists andteachers, all giving their time, skills and talent for free.

HoxtonStreet Monster Supplies was established in 1818 as the only supplier for thedaily needs of monsters of every kind – catering to the living, dead andundead. It’s their ultimate general store – part grocer’s, part DIY supplier, part stationer, part sweetshop..

The shop is the front for the Ministry ofStories, and is a very tangible example of the power of imagination andstorytelling. As well as buyingmonster goods from the shop, we want young people (and adults) to experience itas a playful space and to be delighted by that experience. We want to achievethe effect of an entire imaginative world, supported by convincing objects andinteractions that make that world tangible and compelling.

THECABINET OF CURIOSITY

The Cabinetof Curiosity is one of these objects. It will display and contain objects ordered by monsters, but which haveyet to be collected; discontinued lines preferred by our older fashionedcustomers, and monster lost property. The cabinet will integrate a range of casing, shelves and drawers(including secret ones). It will be mobile, accessible to young people in theshop and used as inspiration for our writing workshops. The Cabinet of Curiosity will bedesigned by Joel Cady and Pippa Nissen of Pippa Nissen Studio. The cabinet will be made at the workshops of RARA, theRedundant Architects Recreation Association. (http://www.r-a-r-a.com) in Clapton, East London, where heavenly ale and freeaccommodation can be provided in return for the lucky candidate's hard work.

Weare looking for an intern to make the cabinet, working at the RARA's workshopfor approximately 3 weeks. Thecabinet will be made primarily from timber, so experience of working with wood(ideally cabinet-making/joinery skills) are required. The role will include discussion of the design with theMinistry of Stories and Pippa Nissen Studio, the fabrication and finishing ofthe cabinet (working from CAD drawings and physical models), and working withprop-makers and ‘physical interactive’ designers to furnish the cabinet.

In additionto the facilities offered by RARA, Ministry of Stories can pay standard travelexpenses within London.'
